Keep this whimsical Handfish from becoming extinct! The charm is cast in sterling silver, is intricately detailed and can stand freely on its lower fins. Dimensions are 1" (25 mm) long, and 3/4" (19mm high)
In March of 2020, the smooth Handfish was declared extinct. Once a common reef fish in Australia and Tasmania, the slow moving Smooth Handfish lived in the benthic zone (the sandy sea floor) and preferred to 'walk' rather than swim. It used modified pectoral fins, resembling hands, to move about on the sea floor. It is/was a member of the warty angelfish family but rather than possessing a fishing lure, its frontal dorsal spine forms a crest. The extinction of this unique angler fish is a reminder of how fragile our planets eco system is.
