This beautiful decorative bowl is handcrafted from mukwa wood in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. This bowl is 9.5" in diameter and approximately 3.5" high. The bowl is painted with a brightly colored insect design. A green beetle, two red lady bugs, two golden bees and two hard working ants scurry around the bowl. The colors are sealed and the bowl is polished. The bowl is intended for decorative use only, not for food service.
The price for all bowls include domestic priority U.S.P.S. shipping in either a medium or large flat rate box depending on the size of the bowl. *Please contact us for international shipping prices.
In 2011, my son John and I traveled to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe where we met Bhekizwe Sibanda selling these bowls in the craft market. We bought several and carried them home in our luggage and later contacted him to make and ship bowls to our California studio. This “Bowl Venture” is not for my profit. All proceeds and more go to benefit Bhekizwe, his family and those involved in crafting the bowls. Creating a market for these hand crafted bowls is our way of helping to give pride to these talented young men and women who wish to provide for their families.
There are four stages to making one of these bowls and in most instances, several different craftsmen or craftswomen are involved in the creation of each. Initially the log must be cut and formed into a rough bowl shape. The bowl is then ground to it’s desired thickness and sanded in preparation for the painting. The design is painted with natural pigments and the bowl is sealed and polished with a light shoe polish.
