This whimsical Spotted Salamander Charm is carefully detailed from its spots down to its toes. Most species have 4 front toes and 5 back although toe count may vary between species. Some species are spotted and others are striped or smooth. This Spotted Salamander Charm is cast in sterling silver, is 1 1/4" long and is completely three dimensional.
Although included in my reptile collection, Salamanders are actually amphibians and although superficially similar to reptiles, amphibians require bodies of water in which to breed. Salamanders have a lizard-like appearance but unlike lizards, their skins are permeable. Because of habitat loss and pollution, many amphibians are endangered. Amphibians are a good ecological indicator to the health of the enviroment. The dramatic decline in amphibian populations around the globe is cause for concern. I have been fortunate to cross paths with California's Giant Pacific Salamander on numerous occassions.
*Ledgend has it that the salamander is supposedly unharmed by flame.
