Of all insects the Mantis is the most common of insects to be kept as a pet. They also are referred to as the ‘femme fatale’ as females frequently eat their mates after copulation. They have triangular heads, bulging eyes and enlarged forearms adapted for catching prey which they keep folded and readied, almost in the position of prayer. They are a fearsome predator in the insect realm. In ancient Greece and Egypt, Mantises were thought to have supernatural powers. There are over 2400 species of Mantises and their habitat ranges from tropical to temperate.
