Moroccan Pyritized Suture Patterned Ammonite - Fossil

Moroccan Pyritized Suture Ammonite - Fossil

This exceptional Moroccan Pyritized Ammonite Fossil was part of a private antique collection over 50 years old. (The collection, not the ammonite:) There were a dozen of exceptional ammonites in the deceased owners collection but we could only afford this one. We have never found anything like this in our many years of searching and shopping for ammonites at the Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil show. One can buy a fossilized ammonite for a few dollars but for our purposes, small ones with jewel like suture patterns are difficult to find. The black sutures of this one have been pyritized over millions of years. We could mark it NFS but we will part with it for a price.

This one is suitable in size for Alisha's Sterling Silver Nautilus pendant. Should you wish it custom set, please reach out to us through our contact page.

Over 10,000 species of ammonites thrived within Earths oceans between the early Devonian age (400 million years ago) through the extinction event, 66 million years ago. The extinct marine ammonite belonged to the class cephalopod and is closely related to octopus, squid and cuttlefish. Their fossils are an excellent index to link rock layers to geological time periods. Their fossilized multi-chambered shells vary vastly between species. Many are strikingly beautiful and collectible on their own.
