This endearing reptile is now threatened but one can occasionally spot them in the deserts or grasslands of Mexico, California and Texas. Their habitat stretches as far up as Canada. They have a flattened and disc like body and camouflage by burying in the sand. When not buried in the sand they bask in the sun and absorb heat like a miniature solar panel. It's many horns and spikes protect its tender belly and when threatened it can also squirt blood from its eyes! How cool is that! They eat a diet of ants containing formic acid. Unfortunately for the horned lizard, the invasive fire ant is decimating many ant species and fire ants to not contain formic acid.
