The above ground cicada lifespan is just 4 to 6 weeks and the sound of millions of males calling for mates is deafeningly beautiful. Unlike locusts, they pose minimal treat to agriculture and they do not bite or sting. Their sole purpose is to mate and lay eggs to propagate the next generation. Their mating orgy creates a feeding orgy for wildlife. Birds, raccoons, snakes and frogs enjoy the all you can eat cicada buffet and fill their bellies with these delectable insects.
There are 3400 species of cicada but Brood X is one of just 7 species with a 17 year periodical life cycle.
