Just as the name implies, flatfish are flat. They have oval or triangular bodies and as they mature, one eye migrates to the other side of its head and rotates independently. They are camouflage experts, many species having chromatophores giving them the ability to change color in an instant to match their environment. They are ambush predators and bury themselves in the sand waiting for prey to pass by. The largest species of flatfish is the Atlantic Halibut that can grow to over 8 feet in length and weigh over 660 pounds.
