This whimsical Dodo Bird Pendant is meticulously detailed, three dimensional and free standing. It is cast in sterling silver and is 1 1/8" high and 1 1/8" across.
The flightless Dodo lived on the island of Mauritius, east of Madagascar. Although well adapted to its environment prior to the arrival of Dutch sailors in 1598 who brought with them invasive species, the last verified siting was in 1662. This large, fat and presumably tasty bird laid just a single clutch egg and went extinct in less than a century. The Dodo rallied much attention as a character in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and has since become the poster bird as a symbol of extinction and obsolescence.
