'Pura Vida' Dragon rides a powerful wave of opalescence. The 66 carat Mexican Matrix opal is an intoxicating surge of turquoise, sunset pink and indigo opalescence. The meeting of the matrix and the pockets of opal are magical. A brilliant 6.5mm tanzanite is set in the curve of the dragon's tail. 'Pura Vida' is a one of a kind dragon with powerful upswept wings. It is lost wax cast in solid 18K gold. Just like a dragon, I've been hoarding this stunning opal for several years.The dimensions of the completed dragon are 2-5/8" high and 1-3/8" across.
It takes a village to bring a design like this to fruition. First, Alisha and I hand pick an opal at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. We both gasped when we spotted this opal at one of our trusted Mexican Opal dealers. We pondered and slept on the possible purchase for two nights. We returned 3 times to examine the stone fearing before each visit that our quarry might have been snatched by another. On the third day, we succumbed to temptation and returned home with our treasure. Often a design inspiration comes to me quickly but this one was most challenging. I must sculpt a design in wax that will secure, protect and showcase the stone. It is a puzzle to be solved. After many false starts, Pura Vida Dragon came to life. Next I ship the fragile completed wax to our casters and I hold my breath that the wax arrives in one piece and that the 18K gold casting is flawless. The unfinished piece is returned to me and I polish and detail the casting. Finally, I pass the opal, dragon and accent stones to our talented stone setter Dave, who solders bezels in place and manages to secure the opal without cracking the stone. I'm just now letting out my breath!
