This remarkable Nautilus Pendant features a fabulous Fossilized Spiky Ammonite bezel set with a sparkling 7mm Ethiopian Fire Opal. The Fire Opal flashes with iridescent greens and Oranges. Each year at the Tucson Gem and Mineral show, Alisha handpicks ammonite fossils choosing the finest specimens available. Each specimen has its unique characteristics and time worn imperfections. (You would too if you were 65 - 300 million years old.) These pendants measure approximately 2" diagonally from the bail to the tip of the tentacles. The Nautilus is cast in solid sterling silver and is drilled and pegged securely into the ammonite shell.

What is an Ammonite? Although it is easy to imagine that today’s Nautilus descended from the Ammonite, the extinct marine Ammonite was more closely related to the octopus, squid and cuttlefish then the nautilus. Ammonites belonged to the class Cephalopoda and first appeared during the Devonian age. Their spiral shape shells are beautiful and the species evolved over millenniums. Depending on ocean sediments and aquatic chemistry the fossilization process creates varied results. There are Ammonites with intricate jade patters; opalized, spiky, rainbow, red flash and pyritized Ammonites.
