Bat Orb - 14K Gold

This magical, Night Flight Bat Orb is cast in 14K gold and wraps around a 20 mm lapis lazuli sphere. The bat is 1-3/8" tall and 1" across (35 x 24 mm). A chain slips through a bail on the bats upswept wing.

Lapis, with its specks of gold, has been prized since antiquity. The Egyptians traded with Afghanistan for this gemstone and during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, ultramarine pigment, (ground lapis) was prized by artists and more valuable than gold. The major cave deposits are in Afghanistan but there are also deposits in Siberia Russia and in the Chilean Andes.
