Alisha found this unusual Mussel and Barnacle shell washed up on the sand at Four Mile Beach in Santa Cruz. This sterling silver life casting is molded from the shell and the pendant is 1 7/8" long and 7/8"" across.
What exactly is a “Life Casting” you ask? It is when you take a form from nature and reproduce it in metal by various methods of molding and burning out of the wax or the natural specimen. One only has one chance to mold a specimen correctly before it is destroyed or damaged irreparably. My old school jeweler friend, Pete Conder was instrumental in brining this piece to fruition. He created a cold mold around the barnacle encrusted shell and subsequently injected waxes into the mold which he gave to me to detail for the master and permanent mold.
